What is a fuel cost calculator?

Fuel cost calculator formula

Here is how to calculate fuel cost by hand. The fuel cost calculator formula is:

Fuel cost = (Distance ÷ Mileage) × Fuel price per litre

• Distance in km (double it for a round trip)
• Mileage in km per litre (km/l)
• Fuel price in ₹ per litre

Distance ÷ mileage gives the litres of fuel needed; multiplying by the price gives the cost in rupees. If your mileage is in L/100km, use Litres = Distance × L/100km ÷ 100. With mpg, divide miles by mpg to get gallons and multiply by the price per gallon.

How to calculate fuel cost per km

The fuel cost per km formula is simply Fuel price ÷ Mileage. A car giving 15 km/l with petrol at ₹95 costs 95 ÷ 15 = ₹6.33 per km. Multiply by any distance to get the cost – 100 km costs about ₹633. This is the quickest way to answer "how much fuel cost" for any journey in your head.

How to calculate fuel cost for a trip – worked example

Say you drive from Delhi to Jaipur, about 280 km, in a petrol car that returns 15 km/l, with petrol at ₹95 per litre, and four friends share the ride.

• Fuel needed one way = 280 ÷ 15 = 18.67 litres
• One-way fuel cost = 18.67 × 95 = ₹1,773
• Round trip (560 km) = 37.33 litres = ₹3,547
• Split between 4 people = ₹887 each

For a daily office commute, enter the one-way distance, pick round trip and set trips to about 22. Using miles, mpg and gallons

Outside India, set the distance unit to miles and the mileage unit to US or UK mpg, and enter the price per gallon. A 250-mile drive in a car that gets 30 US mpg with gas at $3.50 a gallon uses 8.33 gallons and costs about $29. A UK gallon is 4.546 litres, larger than the 3.785-litre US gallon, so UK mpg figures look higher for the same car. If your car shows L/100km, choose that unit – 6.5 L/100km equals about 15.4 km/l. Tips to cut your fuel cost

• Keep tyres at the recommended pressure – under-inflated tyres can cut mileage by 3–5%.
• Drive at a steady 60–80 km/h on highways; fuel use rises sharply above 90 km/h.
• Avoid hard acceleration and long idling; switch off the engine at long signals.
• Remove roof racks and extra weight, and service the car on time.
• Use the AC sensibly in the city; at highway speeds, closed windows with AC can be more efficient than open windows.

Why your real fuel cost may differ

Company-claimed (ARAI) mileage is measured in lab conditions; real mileage is usually 15–30% lower in city traffic. For an accurate result, measure your own mileage: fill the tank fully, reset the trip meter, drive normally, refill fully and divide the km driven by the litres refilled. Hilly roads, traffic, AC use, load and driving style all change the figure, so treat every fuel cost estimate as a close approximation.
