Here is how to calculate fuel cost by hand. The fuel cost calculator formula is:
Fuel cost = (Distance ÷ Mileage) × Fuel price per litre
- Distance in km (double it for a round trip)
- Mileage in km per litre (km/l)
- Fuel price in ₹ per litre

How to calculate fuel cost for a trip – worked example
Say you drive from Delhi to Jaipur, about 280 km, in a petrol car that returns 15 km/l, with petrol at ₹95 per litre, and four friends share the ride.
- Fuel needed one way = 280 ÷ 15 = 18.67 litres
- One-way fuel cost = 18.67 × 95 = ₹1,773
- Round trip (560 km) = 37.33 litres = ₹3,547
- Split between 4 people = ₹887 each

- Keep tyres at the recommended pressure – under-inflated tyres can cut mileage by 3–5%.
- Drive at a steady 60–80 km/h on highways; fuel use rises sharply above 90 km/h.
- Avoid hard acceleration and long idling; switch off the engine at long signals.
- Remove roof racks and extra weight, and service the car on time.

Why your real fuel cost may differ
Company-claimed (ARAI) mileage is measured in lab conditions; real mileage is usually 15–30% lower in city traffic. For an accurate result, measure your own mileage: fill the tank fully, reset the trip meter, drive normally, refill fully and divide the km driven by the litres refilled. Hilly roads, traffic, AC use, load and driving style all change the figure, so treat every fuel cost estimate as a close approximation.
