What is a grade calculator?
A grade calculator works out your overall course grade when different pieces of work count for different amounts – assignments 20%, quizzes 20%, mid-term 25% and final exam 35%, for example. It also answers the question every student asks before exams: what grade do I need on the final? This online grade calculator does both. Enter your scores and weights to get your weighted grade and letter grade, or switch mode to see the final exam score you need to reach a target such as 80% or a pass mark.
How to use this grade calculator
Weighted grade mode
- For each category, enter your score as a percentage and the weight from your syllabus. To turn raw marks into a percentage, divide marks by the maximum and multiply by 100 (18 out of 25 = 72%).
- Leave a score blank if you have not taken that exam yet. The calculator then shows your current grade based only on work completed.
- Read the weighted grade, the points earned and the letter grade.
Final exam mode
- Enter your current grade before the final, the weight of the final exam and the grade you want.
- The result is the minimum final exam score you need, plus a table of course grades for final scores from 0% to 100%.
Grade calculator formula
A grade calculator with weights uses a weighted average:
Weighted grade = Σ (score × weight) ÷ Σ weights
- Score = your percentage in each category.
- Weight = how much that category counts, as a percentage of the course.
- If the weights add up to 100, the result is just Σ (score × weight) ÷ 100.
Worked example
Assignments 85% × 20 = 17 points, quizzes 78% × 20 = 15.6, mid-term 72% × 25 = 18, final 80% × 35 = 28. Total = 78.6 points out of 100, so the weighted grade is 78.6%, a C on the US letter scale (C+ where plus/minus grades are used) and an A (8 grade points) on many Indian 10-point scales. This is the default example above.
What score do I need on the final exam?
The final grade calculator rearranges the same formula:
Final needed = (Target − Current × (1 − w)) ÷ w
where w is the final exam weight as a decimal. With a current grade of 76%, a final worth 35% and a target of 80%: (80 − 76 × 0.65) ÷ 0.35 = (80 − 49.4) ÷ 0.35 = 87.43%. If the answer is above 100%, the target cannot be reached without extra credit; if it is below 0, you have already locked it in.
How much do I need to pass?
Set the target to your pass mark – often 40% in Indian universities, 50% in many other countries, or 60% (a D) in US schools. With 45% going into a final worth 40%, you need (40 − 45 × 0.6) ÷ 0.4 = 32.5% to reach 40%.

Bands vary: many US colleges add plus/minus grades, and Indian universities such as Anna University, VIT and CBSE boards set their own marks ranges. Always check your institution's grading table.
How to calculate grade from marks (India)
To calculate grade points from marks, first find the percentage in the subject, then look up the band. 82 marks out of 100 falls in 80–89, so the grade is A+ with 9 grade points under the UGC model. CBSE Class 10 and 12 use a relative nine-point scale (A1 to E) where A1 goes to the top 1/8th of students who pass, so the same marks can map to different grades in different years.
To go from grade points to an overall result, multiply each subject's grade point by its credits and divide by total credits – that is your SGPA. Grade calculator for a test: how many can I get wrong?
For a single test, the grade is simply correct ÷ total × 100. On a 40-question test, each question is worth 2.5%. To score at least 80% you can get 8 wrong (32 ÷ 40 = 80%). For any test: maximum wrong = total × (1 − target ÷ 100), rounded down.
Weights that do not add up to 100, extra credit and zero-based grading
- No weights: if every item counts equally, give them all the same weight – the result is a plain average. The average calculator handles long lists of marks.
- Point-based courses: if your syllabus lists points instead of percentages (e.g. 200 points of homework out of 1,000), use points ÷ total as the weight.
- Extra credit: add bonus points to the category score (it may go above 100%), or add them straight to the final percentage if your teacher does that.
- Zero-based grading: missing work counts as 0, so enter 0 rather than leaving it blank once the deadline has passed.

How to calculate grades in Excel
Put scores in B2:B5 and weights in C2:C5, then use =SUMPRODUCT(B2:B5,C2:C5)/SUM(C2:C5). For a letter grade, add a lookup table and use =LOOKUP(D2,{0,60,70,80,90},{"F","D","C","B","A"}). The same logic works in Python or any language: multiply, sum and divide.
Grade calculator: marks, percentage and letter grade
Most students start with raw marks. Turn each mark into a percentage (marks ÷ maximum × 100), enter it with its weight, and the calculator returns the weighted percentage and the letter grade. Grade calculator with extra credit
Extra credit is usually added in one of two ways. If your teacher adds bonus points to one assignment, enter that assignment's score above 100% (for example 105%). If extra credit is a separate item, add it as its own row with a small weight such as 2–5%. Either way, check the syllabus: some courses cap the final grade at 100%.
Grade calculator zero based vs 50-percent floor
In zero-based grading a missing assignment counts as 0%, which pulls a weighted average down sharply: a 0 on a task worth 20% costs up to 20 percentage points. Grade calculator (India): SSLC, Plus One and university exams
Kerala SSLC and Higher Secondary (HSE) marks are converted to grades in 10-mark bands: A+ is 90–100%, A is 80–89%, B+ is 70–79%, B is 60–69%, C+ is 50–59%, C is 40–49%, D+ is 30–39%, D is 20–29% and E is below 20%. For this grade calculator the method is the same everywhere, although VIT, VIT Bhopal, DTU, KTU, RVCE, Anna University and Thapar each grade courses on a 10-point grade-point scale, but the mark cut-offs differ, and some (VIT is the best-known example) use relative grading, where the letter depends on how the whole class did. In the IIT Madras online BS degree each course announces its own formula, usually combining weekly quiz scores, the OPPE programming exams and the end-term exam. Grade calculator for university scales abroad
Not every university uses a 4.0 GPA, so a grade calculator for QUT, Laurier, YorkU or a NZ university needs the local scale. Queensland (QUT and JCU) uses a 7-point scale, where a 7 is 85% and above and a 4 (pass) starts at 50%. Wilfrid Laurier uses a 12-point scale with A+ = 12 for 90% and above, and York University (YorkU) uses a 9-point scale with A+ = 9.
