    Order of operations

    The calculator follows the standard BODMAS / PEMDAS rule, the same one used by Casio and Sharp models:

    1. Brackets
    2. Factorial and percent (n!, x%)
    3. Powers and roots (xy, x², √) – evaluated right to left, so 2^3^2 = 2^9 = 512
    4. Unary minus – so −3² = −9, while (−3)² = 9
    5. Multiplication and division, left to right – including implied multiplication such as 2π or 3(4 + 1)
    6. Addition and subtraction, left to right

    Degrees vs radians

    Angles can be measured in degrees (a full turn is 360°) or radians (a full turn is 2π). sin(90) is 1 in DEG mode but 0.894 in RAD mode, because 90 radians is a very different angle. Use degrees for most school geometry and trigonometry; use radians for calculus, physics formulas with angular frequency, and whenever an angle is written with π, such as sin(π/6). The inverse functions return their answer in the unit you have selected. tan(90°) is undefined, and the calculator tells you so instead of printing a meaningless huge number.

    How to use percentage on a scientific calculator

    On this calculator, % simply divides the number before it by 100. So to find 18% of 2,500, type 18% × 2500 or 2500 × 18% – both give 450. To add 18% GST to ₹2,500, type 2500 × (1 + 18%) = 2,950. For marks, discounts and hikes with the working shown, the percentage calculator is quicker.

    Log base 2 and other bases

    The calculator has log (base 10) and ln (base e). For any other base use the change-of-base rule: logb(x) = log(x) ÷ log(b). For log base 2 of 64, type log(64) ÷ log(2) = 6. The log calculator does this directly for any base.

    Scientific notation on the calculator

    Scientific notation writes a number as a × 10n, where a is between 1 and 10. Very large and very small answers are shown in this form using E: 6.02214076E23 means 6.02214076 × 1023. You can type E yourself inside a number – for example 3E8 for the speed of light, 3 × 108 m/s – or use × 10^. To calculate scientific notation without a calculator, move the decimal point until one non-zero digit is left of it and count the moves: 45,000 = 4.5 × 104, and 0.0032 = 3.2 × 10−3.

    Worked examples

    • Height of a building: from 40 m away, the top is at an angle of 35°. Height = 40 × tan(35) = 28.01 m.
    • Compound growth: ₹10,000 at 8% for 5 years = 10000 × 1.08^5 = 14,693.28.
    • Combinations: ways to choose 3 from 7 = 7! ÷ (3! × 4!) = 35.
    • pH: for [H⁺] = 3.2E−5, pH = −log(3.2E−5) = 4.49.
    • Quadratic roots: for x² − 5x + 6 = 0, (5 + √(25 − 24)) ÷ 2 = 3 and (5 − √(1)) ÷ 2 = 2. The quadratic equation calculator solves any a, b, c.
