What is a GST calculator?

A GST calculator is a free online tool that works out the Goods and Services Tax on a price in one step. This GST calculator India edition does both jobs you meet in daily billing: it adds GST to a net price (GST exclusive) and it removes GST from a final price that already includes tax (GST inclusive). It also shows the CGST and SGST split for a sale inside one state and the IGST figure for a sale to another state, so you can write a correct tax invoice or check a bill you received.

The rate list follows the GST 2.0 reform that took effect on 22 September 2025, and the page is up to date as of September 2026. Most goods and services now fall under two main slabs, 5% and 18%, with a special 40% rate for luxury and sin goods.

What is GST?

GST is India's single indirect tax on the supply of goods and services. It replaced excise duty, VAT, service tax and several other levies from 1 July 2017. GST is charged at each stage of the supply chain, but a registered business claims input tax credit for the GST it paid on purchases, so the tax is finally borne by the consumer. Every registered business gets a 15-character GSTIN (GST number), which starts with the state code and contains the business's PAN.

How to use this GST calculator online

  1. Amount – type the price. If the price already includes GST (for example an MRP or a restaurant bill total), you will pick "Remove GST" in step 3.
  2. GST rate – choose 0%, 0.25%, 3%, 5%, 18% or 40%, or pick "Other rate" to type any percentage, such as 12% or 28% for an invoice raised before the reform.
  3. Add or remove GST – "Add GST" treats the amount as the taxable value. "Remove GST" treats it as the final amount including GST and works backwards.
  4. Type of supply – choose "same state" to split tax equally into CGST and SGST, or "another state" for IGST.

The result updates as you type, so this online GST calculator is quick to use for a single price, a full bill or a quote with a discount (apply the discount first, then GST on the reduced price).

GST calculation formula

Formula to add GST (GST exclusive price)

GST amount = Net price × GST rate ÷ 100    |    Total = Net price + GST amount

Formula to remove GST (calculate GST from total amount)

Net price = Total × 100 ÷ (100 + GST rate)    |    GST amount = Total − Net price

  • Net price = taxable value before GST
  • Total = final amount including GST
  • GST rate = the applicable slab, such as 5 or 18

GST calculator formula with example

Adding GST: a laptop bag costs ₹1,000 before tax at 18%. GST = 1,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹180. The final price is ₹1,180. For a sale within the state this is CGST ₹90 + SGST ₹90; for an inter-state sale it is IGST ₹180.

Removing GST: you paid ₹1,180 including 18% GST. Net price = 1,180 × 100 ÷ 118 = ₹1,000, so the GST included in the bill is ₹180. The same method answers the common question "how to calculate GST from the total amount" for any rate: divide by 1.05 for 5%, by 1.18 for 18% and by 1.40 for 40%.

GST rates in India after GST 2.0 (as of 2026)

The 56th GST Council meeting simplified the old four-slab structure (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%). From 22 September 2025 the main rates are:

GST rateWhat it covers (examples)
0% (nil / exempt)Fresh fruit, vegetables, milk, bread, individual health and life insurance premiums, many life-saving medicines, educational services
0.25%Rough diamonds, precious and semi-precious stones
3%Gold, silver, jewellery (making charges are taxed separately at 5%)
5% (merit rate)Packaged food items, soaps, shampoo, toothpaste, most medicines, bicycles, economy hotel rooms, restaurant services
18% (standard rate)Most goods and services: electronics, air conditioners, TVs, small cars and bikes up to 350 cc, cement, professional and IT services
40% (special rate)Pan masala, tobacco products, aerated and sugary drinks, luxury cars, motorcycles above 350 cc, yachts, private aircraft

Rates depend on the exact HSN or SAC code, and the Council can change them, so confirm the rate for your product on the official CBIC rate finder before issuing an invoice.

CGST, SGST and IGST explained

A GST calculator with CGST and SGST matters because the tax is shared between the Centre and the states:

  • Intra-state sale (seller and buyer in the same state): half the GST is Central GST (CGST) and half is State GST (SGST), or UTGST in a union territory. At 18%, that is 9% CGST + 9% SGST.
  • Inter-state sale (different states, or imports): the full rate is charged as Integrated GST (IGST). At 18%, IGST is 18%.

The total tax is the same either way; only the split on the invoice changes. The calculator above shows whichever split you choose.

How to calculate GST on gold and gold jewellery

For gold jewellery, GST is 3% on the value of gold (plus stones) and 5% on the making charges when they are billed separately. Example: gold worth ₹60,000 and making charges of ₹6,000. GST on gold = ₹1,800; GST on making charges = ₹300; the total bill is ₹68,100. Use this GST calculator for gold twice (once at 3%, once at 5%) and add the results.

How to calculate GST on MRP

In India the MRP printed on a packet already includes GST. To find the tax inside an MRP, choose "Remove GST" and enter the MRP. A ₹105 item at 5% GST has a net price of ₹100 and GST of ₹5.

How to add GST on a calculator by hand

On a basic calculator, multiply the price by 1 plus the rate as a decimal: price × 1.18 for 18% GST, or × 1.05 for 5%. To remove GST, divide instead: total ÷ 1.18. To get only the tax, subtract the net price from the total. In Excel or Google Sheets, =A2*18% gives GST to add and =A2-A2/1.18 gives GST included in a total.

How to calculate monthly GST payable

A registered business pays the difference between output tax and input tax credit: GST payable = GST collected on sales − GST paid on eligible purchases. Sales are reported in GSTR-1 and the tax is paid through GSTR-3B, usually by the 20th of the next month. If you pay late, interest is charged at 18% a year on the net tax paid late, plus a late fee for delayed returns. The auto-drafted GSTR-2B statement shows the input tax credit you can claim.

Tips for accurate GST billing

  • Apply any discount shown on the invoice before calculating GST; a discount given after the sale needs a credit note.
  • Round the GST amount to two decimals on each line; round off the invoice total to the nearest rupee only at the end.
  • Check the place of supply to decide between CGST + SGST and IGST.
  • For a quantity of items, multiply unit price by quantity first, then apply GST to the line total.

GST calculator on final amount (including GST)

When a price already includes tax, choose "Remove GST" – this turns the page into a GST calculator on final amount. The rule is base price = final amount × 100 ÷ (100 + GST rate). On a bill of ₹1,180 including 18% GST, the base is ₹1,000 and the GST is ₹180.

GST calculator including GST vs without GST

A GST calculator including GST (inclusive) starts from the total and works backwards; a GST calculator without GST (exclusive) starts from the pre-tax price and adds tax. Pick the matching option: ₹1,000 without GST becomes ₹1,180 at 18%, while ₹1,000 including GST contains ₹847.46 of value and ₹152.54 of tax.

GST calculator minus: taking GST out

Many people try "amount minus 18%" to remove GST, but that is wrong: ₹1,180 minus 18% is ₹967.60, not ₹1,000. A GST calculator minus the tax must divide by 1.18, which is exactly what the Remove GST option does.

GST calculator with quantity, discount and round off

For an invoice line, multiply quantity by the unit price, subtract any discount given on the invoice, and then add GST. Example: 12 units × ₹250 = ₹3,000; at 18% within the same state, CGST is ₹270, SGST is ₹270 and the total is ₹3,540. Enter the line value (₹3,000) in this GST calculator with quantity already applied. Invoice totals are usually rounded to the nearest rupee, so a GST calculator with round off would show ₹3,540.40 as ₹3,540 with a round-off of −₹0.40.

GST calculator on gold jewellery

Use the GST calculator on gold jewellery at 3% for the gold and stone value, and apply the making-charge rate separately if the jeweller bills making charges on their own, as explained above.

Calculator for GST and service charge

Restaurant bills in India carry 5% GST (2.5% CGST + 2.5% SGST) at most standalone restaurants. Under consumer-protection guidelines a service charge is voluntary and cannot be added automatically; if one is charged, GST applies on the food plus the service charge.

GST calculator late fees and interest

If you file GSTR-3B late, the late fee is ₹50 a day (₹25 CGST + ₹25 SGST), or ₹20 a day for a nil return, up to a cap that depends on your turnover. Unpaid tax also attracts interest at 18% a year. For example, ₹50,000 of GST paid 20 days late costs about ₹493 of interest plus a ₹1,000 late fee. Use this GST calculator to find the tax, then add late fees and interest separately.

GST calculator for New Zealand, Australia and Canada

Choose "Other rate" and enter the local rate to use this GST calculator outside India:

PlaceGST rateGST in a tax-inclusive price
New Zealand (NZ)15%3/23 of the total
Australia – QLD, VIC and all states10%1/11 of the total
Jersey (Channel Islands)5%1/21 of the total
Canada – Yukon (GST only)5%1/21 of the total

A GST calculator for NZ therefore takes $15 out of a $115 price. Australia's 10% GST is the same in QLD and VIC because it is a federal tax. In Canadian provinces that add a provincial sales tax, such as British Columbia (7% PST), a calculator for GST and PST should add both – 5% + 7% = 12% on top of the price.

A GST calculator for Jersey or Yukon uses 5%, and a GST calculator for QLD or VIC uses Australia's 10%.

Billing software and online GST verification

This calculator is for quick checks. For regular invoicing, the best GST billing software is one that generates GST-compliant invoices with HSN codes, e-invoices and e-way bills if your turnover requires them, and exports data for GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B. Before you claim input tax credit, do an online GST verification of your supplier's GSTIN with the "Search Taxpayer" option on the official GST portal to confirm the number is active.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate GST from the total amount?

Divide the total by (1 + rate ÷ 100) to get the net price, then subtract it from the total. For ₹1,180 at 18%: 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000, so GST is ₹180. Choose "Remove GST" in the calculator to do this automatically.

What are the GST rates in India in 2026?

After the GST 2.0 reform effective 22 September 2025, the main rates are 5% and 18%, with 40% for luxury and sin goods, 3% for gold and silver, 0.25% for rough diamonds and 0% for exempt essentials.

How is GST split into CGST and SGST?

For a sale within one state, the GST is split equally: 18% GST becomes 9% CGST and 9% SGST. For a sale to another state, the whole 18% is charged as IGST.

How do I calculate GST percentage on a price?

Multiply the price by the GST rate and divide by 100. For ₹2,500 at 5%, GST is 2,500 × 5 ÷ 100 = ₹125, and the total is ₹2,625.

What is GSTIN?

GSTIN is the 15-character GST identification number given to every registered business. The first two digits are the state code and the next ten are the PAN of the business.

What is GSTR-3B?

GSTR-3B is the monthly or quarterly summary return in which a registered business declares its sales, claims input tax credit and pays the net GST due.

Is this GST calculator free?

Yes. The GST calculator is free, needs no download or sign-up and works on mobile and desktop.

How do I calculate GST on the final amount?

Divide the final amount by (1 + GST rate ÷ 100). For ₹1,180 at 18%, the base is ₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000 and GST is ₹180. Choose Remove GST in the calculator to do it automatically.

What is the late fee for filing GST returns late?

For GSTR-3B the late fee is ₹50 a day (₹20 a day for nil returns), capped according to turnover, plus 18% a year interest on any tax paid late.
