What is an FD calculator?

An FD calculator shows how much your fixed deposit will pay at maturity. Enter the deposit amount, the FD interest rate and the tenure – in years and months, or in days for special tenures such as 444 days – and this online FD calculator instantly shows the maturity amount, total interest and the effective annual yield. Choose a non-cumulative option to see the FD monthly payout or quarterly interest instead. There is also a senior citizen option that adds the extra rate banks offer to depositors aged 60 and above.

What is FD in bank?

What is FD? A fixed deposit (FD, also called term deposit; the receipt is called an FDR) is a deposit you place with a bank, small finance bank, post office or NBFC for a fixed period at a fixed interest rate. The rate is locked on the day you open it, so market changes do not affect your returns. Bank FDs in India are insured by DICGC up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank, including interest.

There are two kinds of FD:

  • Cumulative FD – interest is compounded (usually quarterly) and paid with the principal at maturity. Best for growing money.
  • Non-cumulative FD – interest is paid out monthly, quarterly, half-yearly or yearly. Best for a regular income, such as for retirees.

How to use the FD calculator

  1. Enter the deposit amount (a lumpsum).
  2. Enter the bank's rate of interest for your tenure.
  3. Pick the tenure in years and months, or in days for day-wise schemes.
  4. Select senior citizen if applicable – most banks add 0.50%, some 0.75%, and a few give super seniors (80+) extra.
  5. Choose the interest type: quarterly compounding (the Indian bank standard), or a monthly or quarterly payout.

FD calculator formula

How to calculate FD interest? Indian banks compound cumulative FDs every quarter, using the compound interest formula:

A = P × (1 + r ÷ n)n × t

  • A = maturity amount
  • P = principal (deposit)
  • r = annual interest rate ÷ 100
  • n = compounding periods per year (4 for quarterly)
  • t = tenure in years (days ÷ 365)

For a non-cumulative FD, the interest per period = P × r ÷ periods per year. For deposits under 6 months, most banks pay simple interest, P × r × t, and the calculator does the same.

FD calculator formula with example

₹1,00,000 in a 5-year FD at 7% with quarterly compounding: A = 1,00,000 × (1 + 0.07 ÷ 4)20 = ₹1,41,478. Interest earned = ₹41,478, and the effective annual yield is 7.19%. A senior citizen at 7.5% gets ₹1,44,995 – about ₹3,500 more on the same deposit.

How to calculate FD interest for 1 year

₹1,00,000 for 1 year at 7% compounded quarterly: 1,00,000 × (1.0175)4 = ₹1,07,186, so the interest is ₹7,186.

How to calculate FD interest for 444 days

Choose "Days", enter 444 and the bank's rate. t = 444 ÷ 365 = 1.216 years. At 7.25% on ₹1 lakh with quarterly compounding, the maturity amount is about ₹1,09,134. Day-wise tenures like 400, 444 or 555 days are popular because banks often pay their best rates on them.

FD monthly interest payout

For a non-cumulative FD with monthly interest payout, ₹10 lakh at 7% pays about ₹5,833 a month (10,00,000 × 7% ÷ 12). Some banks calculate it at a discounted rate, so the actual credit may be slightly lower, e.g. about ₹5,800. A quarterly payout would be ₹17,500 every three months. Retirees can compare this with an SWP from a mutual fund.

FD interest rates in India (2026)

As of 2026, large banks pay roughly 6.25–7.25% for 1–5 year FDs, while small finance banks offer 7.5–8.5%. Senior citizens usually get 0.25–0.75% more. Rates change often, so always check the bank's current rate card and enter it here for an exact FD calculator comparison across banks. Post office time deposits (1–5 years) are set quarterly by the Government.

Tax on FD interest

  • FD interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate.
  • Banks deduct TDS at 10% when interest from one bank crosses ₹50,000 a year (₹1 lakh for senior citizens) under the thresholds applicable from April 2025. Submit Form 15G/15H if your total income is below the taxable limit.
  • A 5-year tax saver FD gives a deduction of up to ₹1.5 lakh under Section 80C (old regime only) but cannot be broken early.

After tax and inflation, the real return on an FD can be small. If your slab is 30%, a 7% FD gives 4.9% after tax.

FD vs SIP and RD

An FD suits money you need safe and on a fixed date. For saving a fixed sum every month at FD-like rates, use the RD calculator. For long-term wealth where you can accept market ups and downs, compare with the SIP calculator. For the general maths behind this tool, see the compound interest calculator.

FD calculation in Excel (xls)

Use =P*(1+r/4)^(4*t), for example =100000*(1+7%/4)^(4*5) returns 141,478. Or use =FV(7%/4, 20, 0, -100000).

Payouts, compounding and odd tenures: what to enter

FD calculator monthly payout and monthly interest

Choose "Non-cumulative – monthly payout" and the FD calculator shows the monthly interest payout that banks credit to your savings account each month.

FD calculator quarterly payout and quarterly compounding

The FD calculator quarterly payout option shows the interest paid every three months. The default cumulative option is a FD calculator quarterly compounding calculation, the standard at Indian banks.

FD calculator yearly compounding and yearly interest

Select yearly compounding for a FD calculator yearly compounding check – some NBFC and corporate FDs compound annually. The year-wise table gives FD calculator yearly interest for each year.

FD calculator days and date wise

Choose "Days" to enter the tenure in days. Special bank schemes often run for 444 days or 400 days, and the FD calculator for 444 days case is worked out above. For a date wise check, count the days between the two dates and enter the number.

FD calculator for senior citizens

Use the depositor option for a FD calculator for senior citizens result. Most banks add 0.50%; some add more for super seniors.

FD calculator for 20 years and 30 years

Banks rarely offer FDs beyond 10 years. A FD calculator for 20 years or 30 years is a FD calculator long term illustration that assumes you renew at the same rate.

FD calculator with tax deduction and inflation

For a FD calculator with tax deduction estimate, reduce the rate by your tax slab: 7% × (1 − 0.30) = 4.9% after tax at the 30% slab. For a FD calculator with inflation view, subtract inflation from the after-tax rate to see the real return.

FD calculator vs SIP calculator

A FD calculator vs SIP calculator comparison should consider risk: FD returns are guaranteed, SIP returns are not.

FD calculator general and normal rates

The "General" option is the FD calculator normal rate for depositors below 60. Enter the rate from your bank's current card.

Is this FD calculator free?

Yes. It is a FD calculator online free to use for any bank in India, with no login. The formula and example above show how FD calculator works step by step.

FD calculator for monthly return and yearly payout

With a non-cumulative FD, the bank pays interest out instead of adding it to the deposit. On ₹1 lakh at 7%, the FD calculator's monthly return is about ₹578 a month (banks discount the monthly payout slightly below ₹583, because you receive it earlier than quarterly interest). A yearly payout, where offered, pays about ₹7,000 once a year, and the principal comes back unchanged at maturity.

FD calculator for yearly investment

If you open a new FD every year, treat each one separately. ₹1 lakh placed each year for 5 years at 7%, compounded quarterly, with all deposits held to the end of year 5, grows to about ₹6.19 lakh on ₹5 lakh invested. For regular monthly saving, a recurring deposit is simpler.

FD calculator for tax saver FD

A tax saver FD has a 5-year lock-in and lets you claim up to ₹1.5 lakh under Section 80C in the old tax regime. Use the FD calculator with a 5-year tenure: ₹1.5 lakh at 7% quarterly grows to about ₹2.12 lakh. The interest itself is still taxable every year, and premature withdrawal is not allowed.

FD calculator in XLS

To build an FD calculator in XLS, use =P*(1+r/4)^(4*years) for quarterly compounding, e.g. =100000*(1+7%/4)^(4*5) returns ₹1,41,478. For a monthly payout use =100000*((1+7%/4)^(1/3)-1).
