What is percentage?
A percentage is a number expressed as a part of 100. The word comes from the Latin per centum, meaning "by the hundred", and it is written with the % sign. 25% means 25 out of every 100, which is the same as the fraction 1/4 or the decimal 0.25. Percentage calculator formula
All percentage problems come from one relationship: part = (percent ÷ 100) × whole. Rearrange it to find whichever value is missing.
X% of Y = (X ÷ 100) × Y · Percent = (Part ÷ Whole) × 100
- X = the percentage (or the part, in "X is what % of Y")
- Y = the whole, the base or the original value
- Increase by X%: new value = Y × (1 + X ÷ 100)
- Decrease by X%: new value = Y × (1 − X ÷ 100)
How to calculate percentage of a number
To calculate percentage of a number, divide the percent by 100 and multiply by the number. For example, 15% of 2,400 = 0.15 × 2,400 = 360. A quick mental trick: 10% of any number is found by moving the decimal point one place left (240), 5% is half of that (120), so 15% = 240 + 120 = 360. The same logic gives 1% by moving the point two places.
X is what percent of Y?
Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. If 45 of the 2,400 people in a survey said yes, 45 ÷ 2,400 × 100 = 1.875%. This mode is also the right one for a target vs achievement check: sales of ₹8.2 lakh against a target of ₹10 lakh is 82% of target.
How to calculate percentage of marks
The percentage calculator for marks uses the formula (marks obtained ÷ total marks) × 100. Add up the marks you scored in every subject, add up the maximum marks, divide and multiply by 100.
Percentage of marks of 5 or 6 subjects
Suppose a CBSE Class 10 student scores 86, 91, 78, 95 and 82 in five subjects, each out of 100. Total obtained = 432 and total marks = 500, so the percentage = 432 ÷ 500 × 100 = 86.4% – the default example in the calculator above. For 6 subjects the maximum becomes 600; if the sixth subject is 88, the total is 520 and the percentage is 520 ÷ 600 × 100 = 86.67%.
The same method works for SSLC, state boards, Class 12, diploma, graduation and university exams. If subjects carry different maximum marks (for example theory out of 70 and practical out of 30), always add the actual marks and the actual maximums – do not average the subject-wise percentages, because that gives the wrong answer when the maximums differ.

Attendance works exactly like marks: classes attended ÷ total classes held × 100. If you attended 58 of 72 lectures, your attendance is 80.56%. Many colleges require 75%; to find how many classes you need, multiply the total classes by 0.75 and compare with what you have attended.

- Salary hike: choose "Increase a number by X%". A ₹60,000 monthly salary with a 12% hike becomes 60,000 × 1.12 = ₹67,200, an increase of ₹7,200.

- GST and tax: 18% of ₹1,000 is ₹180, so the price with GST is ₹1,180.
- Gold price: if gold goes from ₹70,000 to ₹77,000, divide the rise (7,000) by the old price for a 10% gain.
Remember that an increase followed by an equal percentage decrease does not return you to the start. ₹100 up 10% is ₹110; ₹110 down 10% is ₹99. Percentages always apply to the current base.

How to calculate percentage on a normal calculator or in Excel
On a basic calculator, type 2400 × 15 % and most models show 360. If yours has no % key, type 2400 × 15 ÷ 100. In Excel or Google Sheets, put the part in A1 and the whole in B1 and use =A1/B1, then format the cell as a percentage; to find 15% of a value use =B1*15%.
Percentage vs percentage points
If a home loan rate rises from 8% to 9%, it has gone up by 1 percentage point but by 12.5% in relative terms (1 ÷ 8 × 100). News reports and bank notices often mix these up, so check which one is meant. Percentage is also different from percentile: a 95 percentile score means you did better than 95% of candidates, not that you scored 95% of the marks.
