What is a discount calculator?
A discount calculator tells you the final price of an item after a percentage is taken off, how much money you save, and the effective discount percentage. Type the original price or MRP and the percent off, and this online discount calculator shows the sale price at once. It also handles "extra 10% off" offers (a double or successive discount), adds GST, VAT or sales tax on top if needed, and works backwards to calculate discount percentage between two numbers when you only know the old and new price.
It is free for shoppers in India and everywhere else. The discount calculator in rupees (₹, INR, Rs) uses Indian digit grouping, and you can switch the currency to dollars, euro, UAE dirham (AED) or any other. There is nothing to download: the discount calculator runs on any phone like an app.
What is discount?
A discount is a reduction from the listed or marked price of a product. In shops it is usually shown as a percentage ("30% off") or a flat amount ("₹500 off"). The marked price is the price before the reduction, often the MRP in India; the selling price is what you actually pay. The difference between the two is the discount amount, and that amount as a share of the marked price is the discount percentage.
What is discount and its types?
- Trade discount – given by a wholesaler or manufacturer to a retailer on the list price. It is not recorded separately in the books.
- Cash discount – given for paying early, such as 2% off if an invoice is paid within 10 days. In accounting it is recorded as "discount allowed" by the seller and "discount received" by the buyer.
- Seasonal and festive discounts – sale offers during Diwali, Black Friday, end-of-season sales and so on.
- Successive (double) discounts – "flat 40% + extra 10% off", where the second percentage applies to the already reduced price.
- Quantity discounts – buy more, pay less per unit; useful when you compare multiple items.
- Senior citizen and student discounts – a fixed percentage for eligible buyers, such as concession fares or hospital and pharmacy offers. Use the discount calculator for senior citizen offers the same way: enter the concession percent as the discount.
How to use this discount calculator
- Choose Sale price after discount to find what you pay, or Discount % between two prices to find how big a discount was.
- Enter the original price. In India this is usually the MRP printed on the pack.
- Enter the discount percentage. For stacked offers, enter the second percentage in "Extra discount".
- If tax is charged after the discount (as with US sales tax, or GST on some B2B invoices), enter the tax rate. Leave it at 0 when the price already includes tax.
The result shows the price after each step, total savings, the effective discount and the final amount to pay.
Discount formula: how to calculate discount percentage
The basic discount formula takes the percentage off the original price:
Discount = Original price × Discount % ÷ 100
Sale price = Original price − Discount = Original price × (1 − d ÷ 100)
To go the other way, this is how to calculate discount percentage when you know both prices:
Discount % = (Original price − Sale price) ÷ Original price × 100
For a double discount of d1% and then d2%:
Sale price = Original price × (1 − d1 ÷ 100) × (1 − d2 ÷ 100)
Effective discount % = d1 + d2 − (d1 × d2 ÷ 100)
- Original price = marked price or MRP before any offer
- d, d1, d2 = discount percentages
- Sale price = price after the discount, before any tax added on top
Worked examples
How to calculate discount price
A jacket has an MRP of ₹2,000 and is 20% off. Discount = 2,000 × 20 ÷ 100 = ₹400, so the sale price is ₹1,600.
Double discount: 20% + 10% off
With an extra 10% off, the second discount applies to ₹1,600: 1,600 × 10 ÷ 100 = ₹160, so you pay ₹1,440. Total savings are ₹560, which is 28% of ₹2,000 – not 30%. The effective discount formula agrees: 20 + 10 − (20 × 10 ÷ 100) = 28%. These are the defaults in the calculator above.
How to calculate discount percentage on MRP
A phone with an MRP of ₹25,000 sells for ₹19,999. Discount % = (25,000 − 19,999) ÷ 25,000 × 100 = 20.0%. This is the "discount between two numbers" mode of the tool.
Discount calculator with sales tax
In the US, prices on the shelf exclude sales tax. A $80 pair of shoes at 25% off costs $60; with 8% sales tax the bill is $60 × 1.08 = $64.80. Tax is always charged on the discounted price, not the original. For tax-only sums use the sales tax calculator.
Discount calculator with GST in India
In India, the MRP already includes GST, so when a shop gives 10% off MRP you simply pay 90% of the MRP; no tax is added on top. Leave the tax field at 0 for normal retail purchases. For business invoices where the rate is quoted before tax, enter the GST rate (5% or 18% under the current slabs) in the tax field and the discount calculator with GST adds it after the discount. The GST calculator splits the tax into CGST and SGST if you need that. The same logic makes this a discount calculator with VAT for the UK, UAE or Europe: VAT-inclusive shelf prices need no extra tax, while ex-VAT trade prices do.
Discount calculator kaise kare? (Hindi mein samjhein)
Discount nikalne ke liye MRP ko discount pratishat se guna karke 100 se bhaag dein. Jaise ₹1,000 par 15% discount = 1,000 × 15 ÷ 100 = ₹150, aur aapko ₹850 dena hoga. Discount percent nikalne ke liye (MRP − bechne ka daam) ÷ MRP × 100 karein.
Discount calculator se discount kaise nikale: upar MRP aur discount % daalein, calculator turant bachat aur final price dikha deta hai.
Discount calculation questions and quick tricks
- 10% off: move the decimal one place left. 10% of ₹3,450 is ₹345.
- 25% off: divide by 4. 50% off: halve it.
- "Buy 1 get 1 free" is a 50% discount on two items; "buy 2 get 1 free" is a 33.33% discount on three.
- Two discounts never simply add up. 50% + 50% off is 75% off, not free.
- Comparing offers across multiple items? Work out the effective discount on the whole cart, then compare the final amounts, not the headline percentages.
To check any percentage by hand, the percentage calculator is handy, and the percentage change calculator shows price rises as well as drops.
How to calculate discount in Excel (discount formula questions)
If the original price is in A2 and the discount % in B2, the sale price is =A2*(1-B2/100). For two discounts in B2 and C2 use =A2*(1-B2/100)*(1-C2/100). To find the discount percentage from an original price in A2 and a sale price in B2, use =(A2-B2)/A2*100.
Rupees, GST, several items or another currency: what to enter
The discount calculator online free version needs no sign-up, so there is nothing to download or install on your PC. Here is how to handle the common cases:
- Shopping in India: amounts show in rupees (₹, INR, Rs) with lakh and crore grouping. Use it on Flipkart, Amazon, Myntra or in local stores to check a sale price against the MRP.
- Percent off: enter any percentage and the calculator shows the discount value in money as well as the final price.
- Discount between two numbers: switch the calculator's mode to find the percent off from an old and a new price – the difference as a percentage.
- With tax: add GST, VAT or sales tax after the discount in the tax field, and the final amount includes it.
- Multiple items: add up the original prices of everything in your cart, apply the shared offer, and compare the final amounts.
- Other currencies: the discount calculator can switch to USD, euro or GBP; to AED or Dhs in the UAE; or to the currency of Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain (BHD), Pakistan (PKR), Nepal, Bangladesh (taka / Tk), Sri Lanka (LKR), Malaysia (MYR), South Africa, NZ or Japan (yen). Only the currency sign changes; the percentage maths is the same everywhere.
Discount calculator logic, for developers
If you are writing a discount calculator in JavaScript, an HTML page or a Java class, the logic is simply: final = price * (1 - d1/100) * (1 - d2/100), then add tax on final. Round only at the end to avoid paisa or cent errors.
What is discount in accounting? And what is discount rate?
In accounting, a trade discount is deducted before an invoice is written and never appears in the books, while a cash discount is recorded: the seller debits "Discount allowed" and the buyer credits "Discount received". The discount rate in finance (used in NPV and discounted cash flow) is a different idea: it is the interest rate used to value future money today.
Discount calculator in BD, dinar and other Gulf currencies
"BD" is used both for Bangladesh and for the Bahraini dinar (BD). This discount calculator works the same way for both: 25% off BD 40 saves BD 10, so you pay BD 30. The same maths applies to Kuwaiti dinar, Jordanian dinar or taka prices.
Discount rate monthly: the discounting formula in finance
In finance, a yearly discount rate is turned into a monthly discount rate with (1 + yearly rate)1/12 − 1. A 12% yearly discount rate is about 0.949% a month. The discounting formula for a monthly cash flow is then:
Present value = Future amount ÷ (1 + monthly rate)months
For example, ₹1,00,000 due in 24 months, discounted at 12% a year, is worth about ₹79,720 today. This is different from a shop discount, which is simply a percentage off the price.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a discount percentage?
Subtract the sale price from the original price, divide by the original price and multiply by 100. For example, (₹2,000 − ₹1,500) ÷ ₹2,000 × 100 = 25% discount.
How is a 20% + 10% double discount calculated?
The second discount applies to the already reduced price. ₹2,000 less 20% is ₹1,600; ₹1,600 less 10% is ₹1,440. The total discount is 28%, not 30%.
What is the discount calculator formula?
Sale price = Original price × (1 − discount ÷ 100). Discount amount = Original price × discount ÷ 100. Discount % = (Original − Sale) ÷ Original × 100.
Is GST added after a discount in India?
For retail purchases the MRP already includes GST, so no tax is added after the discount. On business invoices quoted before tax, GST is charged on the price after the discount.
Is sales tax calculated before or after a discount?
After. In the US and most other places, sales tax is charged on the discounted selling price, so a discount also lowers the tax you pay.
Can I use this discount calculator in rupees and other currencies?
Yes. It works as a discount calculator in Indian rupees by default and you can switch the currency to dollars, euro, dirham or any other; the percentage maths is the same.
What is 15% off ₹1,000?
15% of ₹1,000 is ₹150, so the sale price is ₹850.
How do I convert a yearly discount rate to a monthly rate?
Monthly rate = (1 + yearly rate)^(1/12) − 1. A 12% yearly discount rate is about 0.949% a month.
