What is GPA?

GPA (Grade Point Average) is a single number that sums up your academic performance. Each grade you earn is turned into grade points – an A is 4 on the US scale, an O is 10 on the Indian scale – and the points are averaged using the credits of each course as weights. A GPA calculator does that weighted average for you. This one works for college, university and high school courses on the 4.0 scale used in the USA, and on the 10-point scale used by Indian universities under the UGC Choice Based Credit System (CBCS).

GPA calculator formula

Every GPA calculator with credits uses the same weighted-average formula:

GPA = Σ (grade point × credits) ÷ Σ credits

• Grade point = the number your letter grade is worth on your scale.
• Credits = the credit hours or credit value of the course; heavier courses count more.
• Σ = add up over all courses in the term.

Worked example (4.0 scale)

Mathematics A (4.0) × 4 credits = 16; Physics A− (3.7) × 4 = 14.8; Programming B (3.0) × 3 = 9; English A+ (4.0) × 3 = 12; Lab B− (2.7) × 2 = 5.4. Total points = 57.2 over 16 credits, so GPA = 57.2 ÷ 16 = 3.58. This is the default example loaded in the calculator.

Worked example (10-point scale)

A+ (9) × 4 + O (10) × 4 + A (8) × 3 + A+ (9) × 3 + B+ (7) × 2 = 36 + 40 + 24 + 27 + 14 = 141 over 16 credits, giving an SGPA of 8.81.

4.0 GPA scale (USA)

Some schools give A+ a 4.3, and many US high schools use a weighted GPA that adds 0.5 or 1 point for honours and AP classes. Check your school's handbook if your transcript shows a GPA above 4.0.

GPA calculator for India: the 10-point scale

Most Indian universities, IITs, NITs, and colleges affiliated to Anna University, VTU, AKTU, SPPU and others grade on 10 points under the UGC CBCS guidelines. The GPA calculator for Indian students above uses this default table:

Your university may use slightly different letters or marks bands (VIT, SRM and Anna University each publish their own), but the maths is identical. The GPA for one semester is usually called SGPA, and the running average across semesters is CGPA.

GPA vs CGPA: what is the difference?

GPA or SGPA is for one term. CGPA (cumulative GPA) is the credit-weighted average of all terms so far. To calculate GPA from SGPA values, multiply each semester's SGPA by that semester's total credits, add them, and divide by all credits. Averaging SGPAs without credits is only correct when every semester carries the same credits. This calculator's cumulative box does the credit-weighted version for you.

How to calculate GPA from marks or percentage

If your marksheet shows marks, first convert each subject's marks to a grade using your university's band (for example 90–100 = O, 80–89 = A+), then use the grade points above. There is no single official formula to turn a percentage into GPA: universities in India convert CGPA to percentage with their own rule (CBSE uses CGPA × 9.5), and US admissions offices or services like WES re-evaluate transcripts subject by subject. For an India-to-USA rough estimate, a 10-point CGPA divided by 2.5 gives a 4-point figure (8.5 → 3.4). Treat it as a guide only; official evaluations can differ.

How much can I raise my GPA?

Enter your current cumulative GPA and completed credits, then try different grades for this term's courses. Because the new CGPA is (old GPA × old credits + new points) ÷ total credits, a single strong semester moves the average less the more credits you already have. After 90 credits at 3.0, 15 credits of straight A's lift you only to about 3.14. That is why early semesters matter most. To plan the marks you need in a single course, use the grade calculator.

What is a good GPA?

• 4.0 scale: 3.5+ is strong for competitive graduate programmes and scholarships; 3.0 is a common minimum.
• 10-point scale: 8.0+ is first class with distinction at many universities; 6.0–7.0 is first class; many campus recruiters set a 6.0 or 7.0 CGPA cut-off.
• The highest GPA you can get is 4.0 (unweighted) or 10.0, which requires top grades in every credited course.

GPA calculator for Indian universities: SRM, VIT Bhopal, JNTUK, LPU, MIT Manipal

Most Indian universities, including SRM, VIT Bhopal, JNTUK, LPU and MIT Manipal, use a 10-point, credit-weighted GPA. That makes this GPA calculator out of 10 a direct fit: choose the 10-point scale, enter each course's grade point (O or S = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8 and so on, as printed on your grade card) and its credits.

Grade letters and pass marks differ slightly between these universities, so read the grade point from your own marksheet rather than guessing it from the letter. The weighting rule, Σ(grade point × credits) ÷ Σ credits, is the same everywhere.

GPA calculator from marks

A GPA calculator based on marks needs one extra step: convert each subject's marks to a grade point using your university's band table. On a typical 10-point table, 90–100 marks = 10, 80–89 = 9, 70–79 = 8, 60–69 = 7, 50–59 = 6. So a GPA calculator from marks of 92, 78 and 65 in 4-, 3- and 3-credit subjects gives (10×4 + 8×3 + 7×3) ÷ 10 = 8.5.

GPA calculator into percentage

To turn a GPA calculator result into percentage, use the formula your university prints on the transcript. Many use GPA × 10 (8.5 → 85%), CBSE uses × 9.5, and VTU and AKTU use (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. The CGPA to percentage calculator has the university-specific rules.

GPA calculator for a degree

For a full degree GPA, weight every semester by its credits, not by semester count. A BTech with semesters of 20, 22, 24 and 24 credits needs the credit-weighted mean of all courses, which the calculator gives when you enter every course in one list.

GPA calculator: how much to raise your GPA

To find how much you need to raise your GPA, use: required GPA = (target × total credits − current GPA × credits done) ÷ new credits. With a 3.2 GPA over 60 credits and a 3.4 target after 15 more credits, you need (3.4 × 75 − 3.2 × 60) ÷ 15 = 4.2, which is above 4.0, so the target needs more than one semester.

GPA calculator for other countries

GPA calculator Germany (Bavarian formula)

German universities use a 1.0 (best) to 4.0 (pass) grade. To convert a foreign grade, the modified Bavarian formula is: German grade = 1 + 3 × (max − your grade) ÷ (max − min pass). An Indian 8.0 CGPA on a 10-point scale with 4.0 as the pass mark gives 1 + 3 × 2 ÷ 6 = 2.0.

GPA calculator Korea

Many Korean universities grade on a 4.5 scale (A+ = 4.5), and some on 4.3. To compare with a 4.0 scale, scale proportionally: a 3.9 on 4.5 is roughly 3.47 on 4.0 when scaled proportionally, though admissions offices may convert differently.

Nepal's NEB (grades 10–12) and Tribhuvan University use a 4.0 grade-point scale (A+ = 4.0, A = 3.6, B+ = 3.2), so the 4.0 mode of this GPA calculator works for Nepal marksheets.

GPA calculator QUT, YorkU and MIT

QUT in Australia reports GPA on a 7-point scale, York University (YorkU) in Canada uses a 9-point scale where A+ = 9, and MIT in the US reports GPA on a 5.0 scale. Enter the grade points as each university publishes them and the weighting still works; only the maximum changes.
