What is a sales tax calculator?

A sales tax calculator adds the correct tax to a price, or takes the tax back out of a total you already paid. Enter a price and a rate, and this free online tool shows the tax amount and the final total. Switch to "Remove tax" and it works as a reverse sales tax calculator: give it a receipt total and it finds the price before tax and the tax hidden inside. It works for any US state, city or ZIP code rate, Canadian GST/PST/HST, VAT in the UK and Europe, and GST in India – just type the rate that applies to you.

What is sales tax?

Sales tax is a tax charged at the point of sale on goods and some services. The seller collects it from the buyer and pays it to the government. In the United States there is no federal sales tax; each state sets its own rate, and counties and cities often add a local rate on top. That is why the same item costs a different amount in Los Angeles, Chicago or Houston. Shelf prices in the US normally exclude tax, so the amount at the till is higher than the sticker.

What is sales tax in USA and what is sales tax in US states?

As of 2026, 45 states and Washington, DC charge a statewide sales tax. Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax, although some Alaskan towns charge a local one. California has the highest base state rate at 7.25%, and combined state plus local rates in parts of Louisiana, Tennessee, Arkansas, Washington and Alabama exceed 9%. Rates change often, so always confirm your exact rate with your state's revenue department or by ZIP code before filing or budgeting a big purchase.

What is sales tax in India? (sales tax calculator India)

India replaced central sales tax, state VAT and most other indirect taxes with the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in July 2017. Prices printed as MRP already include GST. You can still use this tool as a sales tax calculator for India by entering the GST rate (for example 5% or 18%), or use the dedicated GST calculator for the CGST/SGST split. Petrol, diesel and alcohol for drinking remain outside GST and still carry state VAT or sales tax.

How to use this sales tax calculator (how to add sales tax)

  1. Choose Add tax if you know the pre-tax price, or Remove tax if you know the total including tax.
  2. Enter the price or total.
  3. Enter the combined sales tax rate for your location (state + county + city).
  4. Read the tax amount, the total and the pre-tax price in the result.

Sales tax calculator formula

This is how to calculate sales tax by hand:

Sales tax = Price × Rate ÷ 100
Total = Price × (1 + Rate ÷ 100)

And this is how to calculate sales tax backwards from a total:

Price before tax = Total ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100)
Tax = Total − Price before tax

  • Price = the pre-tax selling price
  • Rate = combined sales tax percentage
  • Total = the amount paid including tax

A common mistake is to take the rate straight off the total. 8.25% of $108.25 is $8.93, but the tax actually included is $8.25, because the rate was applied to $100, not to $108.25.

Sales tax examples

Adding tax to a price

A $100 item in a city with an 8.25% combined rate: tax = 100 × 8.25 ÷ 100 = $8.25, total = $108.25.

Reverse sales tax from a receipt

Your receipt says $108.25 including 8.25% tax. Price before tax = 108.25 ÷ 1.0825 = $100.00 and the tax is $8.25. These are the defaults in the calculator, so you can check them.

How to calculate the sales tax percentage from a total

If you know both the pre-tax price and the total, the rate is (Total − Price) ÷ Price × 100. For a $50 item that rang up at $53.50, the rate is 3.50 ÷ 50 × 100 = 7%.

How to calculate sales tax on a car

Most states charge sales or use tax on a vehicle purchase, usually when you register it at the DMV. The taxable amount is normally the sale price minus any trade-in allowance (in most states) and minus manufacturer rebates in some. Example: a $30,000 car, a $8,000 trade-in and a 6% rate gives tax of (30,000 − 8,000) × 6% = $1,320. Enter $22,000 and 6% in the calculator to check. Dealer fees and registration charges are separate; ask for an out-the-door price. If you are financing the car, add the tax to your loan budget and then use the loan calculator.

Sales tax calculator with discount

Sales tax applies to the price you actually pay, after store discounts. A $80 item at 25% off becomes $60, and at 8% tax the total is $64.80. Find the sale price first with the discount calculator, then add tax here. Manufacturer coupons that are reimbursed to the store are taxed on the pre-coupon price in many states.

Sales tax outside the US

  • Canada: 5% federal GST, plus provincial tax. Ontario uses a 13% HST; BC charges 5% GST + 7% PST; Saskatchewan 5% GST + 6% PST; Quebec 5% GST + 9.975% QST, a combined 14.975%.
  • UK and Europe: VAT is included in shelf prices (20% standard rate in the UK), so use "Remove tax" to find the net price.
  • Japan: consumption tax of 10% (8% on most food).
  • Pakistan: general sales tax of 18% on most goods.
  • India: GST, mostly 5% or 18%, included in MRP.

Sales tax on online shopping

Since the 2018 South Dakota v. Wayfair ruling, US states can require online sellers to collect sales tax even without a local store, so most online orders now show tax at checkout at your delivery address's rate. Travelers comparing prices, such as sales tax in CA vs TX, should compare the full total rather than the sticker price.

How do I calculate sales tax on a calculator?

Turn the rate into a multiplier: 1 + rate ÷ 100. For 7% tax, multiply the price by 1.07 to get the total. To reverse it, divide the total by 1.07. On a phone calculator, 45 × 1.07 = 48.15, and 48.15 ÷ 1.07 = 45.
