How to use the spin the wheel picker

1. Type your entries in the box, one per line. Six sample names are there to start – delete them and add your own. The wheel redraws as you type.
2. Press Spin the wheel. The wheel spins for about four seconds and eases to a stop under the pointer at the top.
3. Read the winner in the result panel. Screen readers announce it too, and the last 10 winners are listed below.
4. Tick Remove the winner after each spin to draw several names without repeats – for example, first, second and third prize.
5. Use Shuffle entries to mix the order on the wheel, or Load Yes / No for a quick yes or no wheel.

How does spin the wheel work? Is it fair?

The winner is chosen before the wheel moves. When you press Spin, the tool asks your browser's cryptographically secure generator (crypto.getRandomValues) for a random number and uses rejection sampling to turn it into a position from 1 to n with no bias. The animation then calculates exactly how far to turn so that slice stops under the pointer. The speed, the number of turns and where the pointer lands inside the slice vary, but they are only for show – they cannot change the result.

That means every entry has exactly the same chance:

P(any one entry wins) = 1 ÷ n

With 6 names, each has a 1 in 6 chance (16.67%); with 30 students, 1 in 30 (3.33%). Nobody can "win" spin the wheel by timing the click, and the wheel is not rigged – the same code runs for everyone, in your own browser.

Spin the wheel with probability (weighted entries)

Want one option to come up more often? Add it more than once. With "Pizza" on three lines and "Biryani" and "Dosa" on one line each, Pizza wins 3 times in 5 (60%) on average. This is the simplest way to build a weighted wheel, and the result panel always shows the chance per line.

Picking several winners: with or without removal

If you leave the winner on the wheel, each spin is independent and the same name can win twice. If you tick remove the winner, each spin draws from those left. Drawing 3 winners from 20 names with removal gives every name a 3 in 20 (15%) chance of being among the winners. The order of winners is also uniform, so first prize is just as fair as third.
